“Tour de France”, “Buffy”, “Tapie”, the program finally unveiled

The sixth edition of the Cannes festival will be broadcast for the first time unencrypted and live on Canal+.

The Canneseries festival, which will be held from April 14 to 19 in Cannes, unveiled on Tuesday March 28 the programming of its sixth edition rich in celebrities and series events, in particular documentaries, such as Tour de France, carpetor adaptations of cult films Fatal Link And False pretenses.

Main novelty: the arrival of a competition category for documentary series, a genre popularized by video-on-demand platforms. Six productions will be in the running, including one on the fall of the former Spanish king Juan Carlos, an investigation into the murder of Chevaline as well as the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster in Canada. Out of competition, the first episodes of Tour de France: in the heart of the peloton, new sports documentary series from Netflix, and Why we fighton the melting ice, will be presented in preview.

In the long format category, ten series will be in competition. Among them, False pretenses, adapted from the eponymous film by David Cronenberg with Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz in the leading role. She will face the biopic carpetto come on Netflix, with Laurent Lafitte in the role of the businessman, and to Spinners, the first African series selected at Canneseries, on the world of Johannesburg gangs and “spinning”, extreme car rodeo. The jury for this category will be chaired by Lior Raz, screenwriter and star actor of the Israeli series. Faudaaccompanied in particular by the actresses Shirine Boutella (papicha, Lupine), Zabou Breitman and Stewart Copeland, drummer of The Police.

“Accessible” and “artistically demanding” series

Launched in 2017 with the Canal+ group, “Canneseries, it’s select and selective“, summed up David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes and supporter of the free series festival open to the public, during the presentation press conference. Canneseries is distinguished by its “narrow selection” around “artistically demanding original series” but “accessible to the general public“, adds to AFP its artistic director Albin Lewi. Sarah Michelle Gellar, the cult killer of buffy the vampire slayerand Morfydd Clark, heroine of rings of powerwill be presented with an honorary prize, while the team of The Fabulous Mrs. Maiselwhich will end in May on Amazon, will come to say goodbye.

The opening ceremony, presented by Camille Chamoux, will be broadcast for the first time unencrypted and live on Canal+ and followed in Cannes by the screening of the first episode of Siloa new UK production from Apple TV+.
