The 12th stage of the Tour de France already promises to be legendary on July 14. The alpine landscapes promise to take the breath away of (television) viewers. After 165.1 km between Briançon (Hautes-Alpes) and Alpe-d’Huez (Isère) and after 21 grueling bends, we can obviously imagine that a Frenchman will want to shine on this very special stage on this day of National Holiday. A million people are expected in Oisans, in Isère, for this 12th stage of the Tour de France. This is the 35th time that Briançon has hosted the Tour de France and the 31st time for Alpe-d’Huez (the first time was 70 years ago).
On the route side, the runners will take the Col du Galibier again – which they have already taken the day before – but this time in the other direction! With the Galibier, the Croix-de-Fer and the ascent of Alpe-d’Huez (a drop of 1120 meters over 14 km), there are three out-of-category climbs awaiting the peloton, enough to calm ambitions, cause damage in the rankings and possible retirements. According to Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France, it is “here the desire to close the battle of the Alps on a route cut for the sharpest climbers. This is the exact replica of the Briançon – Alpe-d’Huez from 1986.” Discover all the details and times of the stage below.
