Tour de France 2022: a 4th stage between Dunkirk and Calais with many climbs

The Tour de France 2022 route returns to Nord Pas-de-Calais after four years of absence. After three stages in Denmark, including the Grand Départ from Copenhagen, the Grande Boucle returns to France with a rest day on Monday July 4 in Lille. It was the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen who won the 3rd stage, the Belgian Wout van Aert is still in the yellow jersey.

The start of the 4th stage will be given in Dunkirk this Tuesday, July 5. The third port of France hosts a stage for the 20th time in its history and a departure for the 7th time including the Grand Départ in 2001. The latter gave the opportunity to a French rider, Christophe Moreau, to put on the yellow jersey by winning the prologue.

After 172 kilometers of racingthe peloton will join Calais, which is a city-arrival for the first time in its history. An arrival on the Opal Coast passing by capes Gis-Nez and Blanc-Nez.

We are very happy to be back and I believe that the public from the North and Hauts-de-France who showed it to us at Paris-Roubaix will also be very happy to welcome us — Christian Prudhomme

Six climbs listed

Christian Prudhomme, the boss of the Tour de France, confided in France Bleu on this course which promises to be more complicated than it seems: “A very selective stage which by the way will not be considered a flat stage. There are many climbs, slides, six climbs listed with sometimes severe percentages, short of course, but severe with often open ground in high, so there are edging possibilities.”

And to insist on the passage by the Côte d’Opale : “And then, a return along the coast, on a route which was that of the 1994 time trial, which Thierry Gouvenou (in charge of the course at ASO, editor’s note) well known as a runner. So, it will be an important stage which will pass by grandiose places cap Gris-Nez, cap Blanc-Nez. It will be wonderful.”
