Victory of Racing against Montpellier, draw between Clermont and Bordeaux, fourth defeat for Montpellier: the 8th day of Top 14 rugby ended this Sunday evening with the defeat of La Rochelle against Toulouse. What should be remembered? France Bleu takes stock.
Toulouse consolidates its leading position against La Rochelle
The gala match at the end of the 8th day of the Top 14 between the last two European champions and their host of internationals came to an end after a red card from the 13th minute for La Rochelle, which Toulouse was able to take advantage of. (26-17), which flies in the lead. With 14 of the 42 players selected to prepare for the November tests on the match sheet, this new “classic” of the championship could raise fears of damage to the French team. It is finally a red card which should deprive the left pillar of La Rochelle Reda Wardi of the three autumn matches of the XV of France against Australia, South Africa and Japan. Guilty of a high tackle on Toulouse scrum-half Antoine Duponthe quickly left his teammates outnumbered.
Draw between Clermont and Bordeaux
Union Bordeaux-Bègles missed out on their first away win but had to settle for a draw (23-23)
on the ground of Clermont which remains undefeated despite everything at home on Saturday after an open and undecided match. It’s here first time this season that two teams separate on a parity score. Previously, the ASM had however imposed itself at the expense of Pau, La Rochelle and Lyon and seemed well on its way to removing a fourth success in a row at the Marcel-Michelin stadium in order to climb on the third step of the podium. The Clermontois are only sixth (20 pts) while the Bordelais, who have already lost four times this season but do not lose for the second time in a row after their success over Racing on October 15 (29-17), win a small place in the standings, from 11th to 10th (16 pts).
Racing 92 inflicts a fourth defeat in a row on Montpellier
Racing 92, invincible at home, inflicted Saturday in its Arena of Nanterre a fourth defeat (38-31) in a row to the reigning French champion, Montpellier, despite a good comeback from the Hérault club in the second period. In a festival of tests (4 on both sides), the meeting pitted two teams against each other who are late in the ignition at the start of the season.
The French stadium continues and sinks Brive
Stade Français won against Brive
(27-0) sound third success in a row during the 8th day of the Top 14, inflicting on the Brivistes a fifth defeat in six matches, Saturday at the Jean-Bouin stadium in Paris. Put under pressure in the second period, the Parisians relied on their dominating scrum to give themselves some air, before taking the lead and the attacking bonus with tries from Léo Barré (58th) and Clément Castets (69th).
Bayonne led before launching the revolt
Bayonne overthrew Perpignan
(24-20) this Saturday at the Jean Dauger stadium. Led by eleven points at the break, the Basques sounded the revolt in the second half to totally change the course of the game thanks to a very good Lopez. Long dominant in defense, Perpignan leaves with a point
and remains red lantern of the championship. Still undefeated at home with this 4th success, Bayonne headbutted an opponent struggling to maintain.
Lyon in difficulty
LOU beat Pau in difficulty
31 to 27 on behalf of the 8th day of Top 14. The Lyonnais made the difference in the second period and recorded a third victory in a row. Lyon, however, did not return to the game in the best possible way. The Section Paloise can legitimately leave Lyon with some regrets, it led for an hour on the lawn of Gerland – thanks in particular to two essays by Ikpefan and Maddocks-, without it being undeserved (17-10). But at that moment, she lost her footing again, the time for LOU to take control, and to break away.
Toulon remain undefeated
Toulon followed up with a fourth success in a row this season at home by dominating in pain Castres (28-20), thanks to tries from Kolbe, Alainu’uese and Nayacalevu, Saturday during the 8th day of Top 14. The Toulonnais (4th) have launched an ambitious bet this season: keep the Mayol stadium untouched. On Saturday, they again fulfilled their contract against a team from Castres (7th) who came to the harbor with a revamped team. Well behind at the break, the Castres returned from the locker room with more ambitions. Very quickly, they put Toulon on the back foot and even found the fault again thanks to their back Thomas Larregain. The Mayol public then witnessed a real showdown between two teams who used the candles a lot to occupy the opposing half of the field.
