Some players, including Hugo Lloris, had already apologized to supporters after Tottenham’s rout against Newcastle (6-1) on Sunday April 23, but Spurs decided to go further. In a press release, Tottenham players announced on Tuesday that they wanted to reimburse the 3,000 supporters who came to encourage them in the north of England: “We understand your frustration and anger. But it’s not enough. We know that words are not enough in these situations. […] We appreciate your support, both home and away, and it is in this spirit that we would like to reimburse our supporters for the cost of their match ticket at Saint James Park, although we know this will not change what happened on Sunday.

In Newcastle, the Spurs sank, being led 5-0 from the 21st minute. The London club has been going through a crisis since the departure of its coach Antonio Conte at the end of March. His interim replacement, Cristian Sellini, was dismissed following Sunday’s defeat, and former player Ryan Mason is now in charge. “We will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday night”, the players also wrote. Tottenham are fifth in the Premier League table, six points behind the same Red Devils, who have two more games to play.
