Toronto | The mayoral by-election is set to take place on June 26.

(Toronto) Toronto’s city clerk announced Thursday that the mayoral by-election to replace John Tory is scheduled to take place on June 26.

John D. Elvidge said that date is subject to City Council meeting next month declaring the position vacant and passing a by-law formally requiring a by-election for Toronto mayor.

The City said the nomination period would run from April 3 to May 12; advance voting would take place from June 8 to 13, and the ballot on June 26.

The city clerk does not normally set dates before council passes the by-law, but in this case it was deemed in the city’s interest to announce the schedule as soon as possible.

The by-election is made necessary following the resignation of John Tory last week. The outgoing mayor admitted he had an “inappropriate relationship” with someone who previously worked in his office.

Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie, who assumed some of the acting mayor’s powers, has already indicated she will not be running.
