Scottie Barnes and the Toronto Raptors have agreed to details on a five-year, $225 million contract extension that could climb to $270 million if he meets all performance benchmarks, a person familiar with the matter said. file to the Associated Press on Monday.
The winger is expected to sign the pact as soon as the NBA lifts the moratorium on new contracts on July 6, said the person requesting anonymity.
The contract would come into effect for the 2025-26 season with a salary of 39 million in the first year which would gradually show up to 51 million in 2029-30.
Barnes will receive 10 million for the next campaign, the last planned for his rookie contract.
The Raptors should build the team around Barnes over the next few years. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2021-22 and was invited to the All-Star Game for the first time this past season.
Barnes’ stats have been steadily increasing since his debut. He averaged 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists last season, all career highs.
The fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft boasts career averages of 16.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists.
