Police Chief James Ramer said officers were called to the scene around 1 p.m. to a report of a person walking around with a gun. He added that the individual allegedly confronted the police and that they shot him dead.

Chief Ramer declined to provide further details on the events as an investigation was opened by the policing oversight body.

The Toronto District School Board had previously announced that four schools in the Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road area had been placed on lockdown due to the police operation launched nearby.

Shortly after, the police indicated that one of the schools had been able to deconfine. Investigators say there is no threat to public safety. Additional patrols should still be deployed near schools.
