“Our expansion to Toronto represents the fifth Michelin destination in North America after New York, Washington, Chicago and California,” Michelin said on its website Tuesday.
The selection process for the Canadian metropolis began four years ago, assures Michelin, which describes Toronto as being a “city of international restaurants, charming cafes and high-end culinary experiences”.
Anonymous Michelin guide inspectors have already started visiting restaurants in the Queen City to assess them, and they will continue to discover the best Toronto addresses in the coming months.
The selection of honored restaurants will be unveiled this fall, according to Michelin, which announced its arrival in Canada alongside representatives of Destination Toronto, a tourism organization.
“(Toronto) is a city where top chefs want to call home and where emerging chefs nurture their culinary talents, drawing inspiration from local and unique Ontario produce,” Michelin said in a statement.
This first selection in Canada must make it possible to “represent the local flavors, the international inspiration and the distinct creativity of Toronto”.
