Tornado wreaks havoc on South Shore

A tornado formed briefly on Montreal’s South Shore Wednesday evening, overturning a vehicle and uprooting several trees in its path.

A video posted on X shows a column of air spinning in the sky before hitting the ground, causing some debris to float. “All of this points to the fact that we had a tornado in Brossard,” confirmed Félix Biron, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Strong winds overturned a van on Matte Street, near Highway 30, in Brossard, according to the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service (SPAL), which said the driver of the vehicle suffered “very minor” injuries. The gusts also uprooted a few trees.

The violent storm line that crossed the South Shore also generated funnel clouds above Boucherville, according to Félix Brion, but the gusts did not turn into tornadoes.

“This type of phenomenon is not rare in the province,” emphasizes Félix Biron, adding that a similar tornadic event was recorded in Greater Montreal as recently as last summer.
