Tornado Causes Significant Damage in Brossard, on Montreal’s South Shore

Environment Canada confirmed Thursday that three tornadoes struck south of Montreal, in the Laurentians and in the Capitale-Nationale region on Wednesday.

The weather events occurred in Brossard, on the South Shore of Montreal, in Saint-Hippolyte, in the Laurentians, and in Portneuf, in the Capitale-Nationale region.

In Saint-Hippolyte, around 4 p.m., trees were uprooted, infrastructure damaged and two-centimeter hail fell, according to Environment Canada.

In Portneuf, the passage of the storm in the early evening caused significant damage to a farm.

Then, at 8:12 p.m., a tornado struck in Brossard and uprooted trees, overturned a semi-trailer and caused damage to infrastructure.

An investigation will be held to find out more about the damage, it was said.

Mélanie Mercille, spokesperson for the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service (SPAL), said the semi-trailer had overturned on Matte Boulevard. The driver suffered minor injuries.

Matte Boulevard was closed to traffic between Highway 30 and Boulevard du Quartier, and was reopened later Wednesday evening.

More than 3,500 customers were without power on the South Shore at 11 p.m. Wednesday. The situation appeared to have been restored by noon Thursday.

Heavy rain fell in southern Quebec on Wednesday evening, particularly in Montreal, the Laurentians, Lanaudière and Montérégie.
