It was indeed a tornado that broke out in Brossard on Wednesday evening, causing damage in the city on the South Shore of Montreal.
Environment Canada confirmed in a weather summary Thursday morning that a tornado struck at 8:12 p.m. and uprooted trees, overturned a semi-trailer and caused damage to infrastructure.
An inquest will be held on Thursday to learn more about the damage, it was said.
Mélanie Mercille, spokesperson for the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service (SPAL), said the semi-trailer had overturned on Matte Boulevard. The driver suffered minor injuries.
“All the signs seem to point to the fact that it is a tornado,” said Félix Biron, meteorologist at Environment Canada.
Mr. Biron points out that a rotating column of air approached the ground before causing damage, signs that the storm is a tornado.
Matte Boulevard was closed to traffic between Highway 30 and Boulevard du Quartier, and was reopened later Wednesday evening.
More than 3,500 customers were without power on the South Shore at 11 p.m. Wednesday. The situation was almost completely restored Thursday morning.
Heavy rain fell in southern Quebec on Wednesday evening, particularly in Montreal, the Laurentians, Lanaudière and Montérégie.
