Spring seems to be early this year in France. A pleasure for vacationers, but above all a worry for orchardists who are wondering about their next harvests.

The abnormally mild temperatures of this month of February seem to indicate that spring will be early. Orchardists are worried about future fruit harvests because the trees are already budding. Flowering leads to the arrival of the first fruits but the situation could prove complicated in the event of frost episodes in April. “It only takes one night for it all to take away”explains Grégory Chardon, arborist in Drôme.

A further drop in temperatures announced

Global warming and uncertain weather pushed him to invest in an anti-freeze device. “We have no vision for the weeks to come (…), that’s what often concerns us, especially when you have a slightly early season”, explains the arborist. Temperatures should nevertheless drop next week, to be more in line with seasonal norms.
