Tokyo Night and Light | The largest video-mapping in the world illuminates a skyscraper

(Tokyo) The imposing towers of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government headquarters now host the largest video mapping permanent in the world, which officials hope will become a new tourist attraction.

A flock of birds, traditional motifs and illustrations of monuments including Mount Fuji are among the images adorning the skyscraper as part of a nighttime spectacle using the technique of video mappingthese audiovisual projections which animate all types of volumes.

The light show debuted Monday, the day after an opening event featuring live instrumental music.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) hopes bright lights projected on its iconic twin-tower building in the central Shinjuku district will “add color” to the capital all year round.

The town hall, which has already opened free observation floors with large windows at the top of each tower to the public, hopes to create a new tourist attraction.

The number of visitors to Japan has surged since the end of border closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a record number of foreign tourists visiting the country in December.

Guinness World Records has certified the attraction, called Tokyo Night and Lightas being “the largest architectural projection in mapping (permanent),” TMG said.
