Devils surprise Lightning, 5-3

The New Jersey Devils scored four unanswered goals in the third period on Saturday, surprising the Tampa Bay Lightning to 5-3.

Tomas Tatar, Yegor Sherangovich, Jimmy Vesey and Dawson Mercer hit the late shots (Mercer in an empty net).

Sherangovich scored the defining goal halfway through the period, completing a brace with a sharp shot from a tight angle.

Before that game, the 23-year-old Belarusian had yet to score this season.

Mercer and Jesper Bratt lead the Devils with 12 points each.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 31 saves for New Jersey, which stopped a three-game losing streak.

Jan Rutta, Pat Maroon and Victor Hedman fought back for the Lightning, who had won three games in a row.

Andrei Vasilevskiy blocked 22 shots.

Martin Necas broke the deadlock late in the second period and the Carolina Hurricanes held on to beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 on Saturday night.

Seth Jarvis put the needle on in a third straight game for the Hurricanes, who posted a fourth straight victory.

Sebastian Aho and Derek Stepan both had a goal and an assist as Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored once for the North Carolina squad.

Adrian Kempe, on two occasions, Blake Lizotte and Brendan Lemieux hit the target for the Kings, who lost a third straight game after a seven-game winning streak.

Frederik Andersen stopped 38 shots and even got an assist for the Hurricanes. Cal Petersen allowed five goals on 20 shots for the Kings.

The offense in transition proved to be a strength of the Hurricanes during the confrontation and it was finally able to give them the lead with 34 seconds left in the second period. Necas rounded defender Mikey Anderson before outwitting Petersen on the far side.
