Werenski crowns the rise of the Blue Jackets
Defenseman Zach Werenski gave his team the lead with 79 seconds on the clock after Yegor Chinakhov’s tying goal and the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 on Monday night.
Boone Jenner added a goal and an assist in this victory for the Blue Jackets, which ended a narrow two-game losing streak. Adam Boqvist and Alexandre Texier, the latter in an empty net, scored the winners’ other goals.
Elvis Merzlikins made 24 saves in net for the Blue Jackets. Dylan Larkin, Michael Rasmussen and Lucas Raymond hit the target for the Red Wings.
The Blue Jackets were down 2-0 in the second period and 3-2 in the third period. However, Chinakhov tied the game with his first NHL goal with 4:18 to go.
On this goal, Jakub Voracek collected his 12th assist, a record for the Blue Jackets. It also allowed him to score a point in a sixth straight game.
Larkin opened the scoring at 2:45 pm of the first frame, after receiving a assist from Raymond. Rasmussen doubled the visitors’ lead early in the second period with his first goal since April 15.
But the Blue Jackets, who had come from behind in their three previous wins, were going to do the Red Wings a blow.
Jenner hit the target at 1:07 of the second period and Boqvist tied the Blue Jackets less than two minutes later.
Raymond put the Red Wings back on track with 6:29 left in the third period.
Tomas Greiss stopped 33 shots.
