The tragedy of his life occurred in July 1990, on a road in the Camargue, and it remained as an indelible mark for Patrick Sébastien. This March 25, 2024, in an interview given to journalist Dominique Lagrou-Sempère, the former host of the flagship program The largest cabaret in the world returned to the death of his son Sébastien, in a motorcycle accident at the age of 19 when he was going to be a father.
“I lost my son. I hugged him“
In the show broadcast on YouTube, “Between you and me“, he remembered: “I lost my son. I hugged him, he left on his motorbike, he killed himself an hour later“. And to add: “It had to happen. I might have squeezed it thirty seconds longer or thirty seconds shorter… But no, it was written like that”. Five months later, Patrick Sébastien welcomed a little girl named Marie-Andréa, whom her dad never knew. And even today, he admits it: “I have the guilt anyway…”
And for good reason, explains the man who always errs on the side of lightness, but who is much more haunted than he lets on: “My son today, that’s what’s terrible, he would be 53 years old. That’s life, that’s how it is. It had to happen but on the other hand, these are wounds that don’t go away” .
Moreover, Patrick Sébastien assures that he is not the only one to live this way. He explains: “I’m friends with people who have had their children murdered. Or worse, children who committed suicide. That’s terrible because you have your guilt.”
“To spend just one day without thinking about the death of my son”
Now, he knows, it is a challenge that he will never be able to meet. Patrick Sébastien thus declared to his host, with tears in his eyes: “L“The real ambition that I will perhaps never be able to achieve is to spend a single day without thinking about the death of my son.”. Upsetting.
