Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI group at the National Assembly, was the guest of 12/13 on Monday March 4 to talk about the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution.
While Congress must meet to vote on the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution, the elected official says she feels “a lot of pride” at the end of this parliamentary fight. “Today, France will speak to the world”she believes, also expressing her “emotion” to feminist activists “who today, but also yesterday and for decades, have fought for the right to abortion”. She hopes that one day “the right to contraception” will also enter the Constitution.
“We need real means”
For her, this “historical victory is also the victory of society”. 80 to 90% of the French population says they are in favor of including abortion in the Constitution. According to her, the fight is not over, we must “real means for the right to abortion, for associations” as well as the repeal of the double conscience clause which today allows doctors to refuse to perform an abortion, she maintains. Today, one in four women must change departments to be able to have an abortion.
