“Gathering and uniting seems difficult”, analyzes the political scientist and deputy director general of the Ipsos polling institute Brice Teinturier, Monday January 31 on France Inter, the day after Christiane Taubira’s victory in the popular primary, while her victory is not recognized by the other candidates from left to presidential Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI), Yannick Jadot (EELV) or even Anne Hidalgo (PS).

According to a photograph of voting intentions today, a month and a half before the first round of the presidential election, “Christiane Taubira’s candidacy takes over the other candidates but does not widen the basket of the left. (…) It is one more candidacy, it is not a candidacy that makes it possible to trigger something that would widen the very fragmented left”he says.

Brice Teinturier believes that Christiane Taubira can obtain 5% of voting indentions “by reducing Anne Hidalgo, who was already not very high, and also by grabbing onto Yannick Jadot” because his constituents have “basically the same values and the same expectations”. On the other hand, the voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon are more loyal to their candidate, which “may help give him a little more head start.”

According to him, “It will take a lot of talent for Christiane Taubira to manage to ‘kill’ another left-wing candidate and to take some votes rather from the center left who votes for Emmanuel Macron”. Because his program – “youth, social justice, the environment, the Republic”“all this already exists” in the programs of other candidates.

The Socialist Party “Risk of being wiped off the map”. According to the political scientist, there are two options: “either the PS disconnects Anne Hidalgo and rallies to Christiane Taubira and there is therefore no longer a socialist candidate, or we continue like this and it is one more candidacy which weakens Anne Hidalgo.”
