to save money on holidays, motorists shun the highway

Inflation is galloping and prices at the pump are soaring! In this weekend of departures on vacation, Bison futé sees red in the direction of returns, orange in the direction of departures. And to save money, many of you prefer to take the national and departmental roads rather than the motorways. In Vendrennes, in Vendée, many motorists prefer to take the D160 rather than the A87 to get to the coast.

On average 80 euros more at the pump for the same trip

On departmental 160, on the road to the Ocean, in Vendrennes, it’s time for a picnic break this Saturday July 16 for many holidaymakers. Clovis, his sister Séverine and five of their respective children are going to La Tranche-sur-Mer for two weeks. “There I have more than 200 euros round trip for a trip between Saumur and my vacation spot, he explains. Last year it was 120 euros. That’s easily 80 euros more.”

Joël, from Le Mans, is not very optimistic about the evolution of prices at the pump. For him, the same observation: prices are soaring. This is the reason why he takes the county road rather than the highway, to reduce his fuel consumption. “It’s not likely to get any better. I’ve never seen fuel prices go down again after their increase. I cost more than 70 euros to go to Aiguillon-sur-Mer, last year it didn’t exceed not 45 euros when I filled up.”

Apps to compare petrol stations

A little further on, a caravan parks. It displays a black, yellow and red flag. “We are Belgian”, smiles Xavier. With his wife Claire, he found another trick to save fuel. “We stopped off the highway to fill up earlier, Clare says. We have applications that allow you to see the price per liter from one station to another. It’s updated regularly and it allows us to save money, because it’s true that this year, the holiday budget will be tighter.”

Apps like Gasoil Now, Fuelio and Zagaz allow you to compare prices from one gas station to another, which are often more expensive on the highway. Even if the price of fuel is struggling to drop below the symbolic two euro mark, on average, more than eight out of ten French people choose to take the car for the summer holidays.
