Charlotte Cardin: The Phoenix Experience

After performing 13 sold-out shows at the MTelus and setting the Plains of Abraham alight at the Festival d’été de Québec earlier this summer, Charlotte Cardin is offering something infinitely more intimate. Originally offered in Spring 2021 to mark the release of the album phoenixthis immersive performance comes in 15 magnificent tableaux, created by Sebaztian.

Belfast

The attachment of the protagonists to their part of the country is very well evoked, in particular thanks to the solidity of family ties. This is one of the qualities of Kenneth Branagh’s screenplay. The couple of grandparents (magnificent Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds) precisely embodies this desire for continuity, despite the pitfalls. This aging couple is also portrayed with great affection. The character of the mother (Caitríona Balfe), a well-rooted woman who would never even think of going to settle elsewhere, is also very solid. It is also worth highlighting the overall quality of a first-class cast.

Ouistreham

The way in which Emmanuel Carrère approaches the question of ethics sometimes sacrifices a sense of nuance in favor of fiction (the writer finds herself at the heart of an emotional betrayal that she would no doubt have avoided in reality), but Ouistreham has the great merit of exposing, with great authenticity, the lives of these people who are too often invisible in the eyes of society and its political stakes.

Parallel mothers

Sober and serious, often moving, madres paralelas (Parallel mothers) is not immediately one of the most spectacular films by the cantor of the Movida, but it proceeds from a profound exploration of all aspects of human nature. Penélope Cruz also finds there one of her greatest roles.

The First Lady

The First Lady, a series presented on Crave, immerses us in the lives of three American first ladies, Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford and Michelle Obama. Three different eras, three women who lived in the White House and who each marked history in their own way. The First Ladyit’s also the pleasure of reuniting with three very talented actresses, namely Gillian Anderson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Viola Davis.

No Time To Die

In truth, No Time to Die is an episode steeped in nostalgia, a feeling that viewers are sure to feel when watching the swansong of an actor who, without counting the most films, is still the one who has lent his features to James Bond for the longest time. And who, thanks to his talent as an actor, gave the character a new depth. It is also obvious that, in the same way as they had done when Daniel Craig entered with Casino Royale, artisans will now have to relaunch the series on a whole new basis. We wish them good luck, because the bar will be very high.

Engine noise

Difficult movie? Yes. Film to see more than once to capture all its essence? Without a doubt. Philippe Grégoire told us in an interview. He likes to make people think. It does not give all the answers. That said, we will not sulk our pleasure. This film includes beautiful ideas and is carried by two young actors in great shape.

Respect

Respect is one of those kinds of films where the value of the show is directly linked to the performance of the actress or actor who plays the main role. On this level, Jennifer Hudson is at the height of a role that few singers and actresses could have held with as much mastery. Without going as far as imitation, the competitor of the third season ofamerican idol(she was seventh in the rankings at the time!) manages to translate vocally – and internally – the transformation of a singer who, going from gospel to jazz without ever really meeting the public, nevertheless took some time to find his voice in the drunk.

Mixmania, 20 years later

Mixmania: 20 years later shines the spotlight on the cohort of 2002, the original Mixes. It’s very good, although a bit short at about forty minutes. There was here a film subject of at least an hour and a half, easy. In a convent setting vintageAnnabelle, Julie, Ariane, Frank, Emmanuel and Pierre-Luc tell Bianca Gervais – who is also directing the documentary – the advantages and disadvantages of having been fed at such a young age by the shrill cries of the Bell Center and the FrancoFolies.

Blue Bayou

Blue Bayou advances with a single objective in mind: to denounce an injustice. It lacks finesse in form, but in substance, we can only give in to the strength of its history and adhere to its purpose. How can you not find it inhuman that people are threatened with being sent back to a country they don’t know after having spent their lives in the one they have always considered their own?

Alexandre Vigneault

hacks

One word for you: Hacks! It’s good, funny and smart. It’s the comedy of the year. The characters that revolve around the two heroines are just as hilarious. There’s the sassy assistant Kayla, the psycho-rigid tour manager and the disconnected personal assistant who provide lots of laughs.
