Since the 2000s, obesity has quadrupled among 18/25 year olds in France. The tax targeting sodas could increase further for companies that decide not to reduce the sugar level in their drinks.

Should sugary drinks be taxed more? This is the project of certain deputies, but would this measure be effective? A single can of soda contains an average of 4 and a half pieces of sugar, or 28g, more than the WHO recommended daily amount of 25g. “Overall, the tax has had little effect on the re-formulation of drinks, it has done little to reduce the sugar level in drinks”explains Yann Le Bodo, economist.

Consumption falling in countries that tax more

For countries that tax more, such as the United Kingdom, consumption has fallen. And the average sugar level has decreased. “We have proof that consuming sugary drinks on a daily basis promotes certain diseases, and we know that if we reduce consumption, we reduce the risk of diseases”explains Doctor Boris Hansel.
