Recent data from IDC indicates that Apple has slipped to second place in the global smartwatch and fitness tracker market, with Huawei now leading. As of September 2024, Huawei holds a 16.9% market share compared to Apple’s 16.2%, largely due to a 20% increase in wearable sales in China favoring local brands. Huawei’s success is attributed to models like the Watch GT 5 Pro, while Xiaomi and Samsung also capture significant shares. Despite strong performance in China, the overall global market has seen a slight decline.
Recent insights from the market research organization International Data Corporation (IDC) reveal that Apple has fallen to the second position in the global smartwatch and fitness tracker market. As of the end of September 2024, Huawei has emerged as the market leader.
The competition remains tight, with Huawei securing a market share of 16.9 percent, while Apple trails closely at 16.2 percent. This shift marks a notable transformation compared to last year, largely driven by a surge in demand within the Chinese market. Over the past year, wearable device purchases in China have increased by 20 percent, favoring local brands like Huawei and Xiaomi.
Huawei’s strong performance can be attributed to its impressive product range, which includes popular models such as the Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro and the Huawei Watch D2, designed for blood pressure monitoring. This success extends beyond China, as the brand continues to excel globally, even as various competitors face challenges.
Smartwatch Surge in China, Global Market Stagnation
In terms of growth, Huawei has experienced a remarkable 44 percent increase in wearable sales year-over-year, whereas Apple’s market share has declined by over 12 percent during the same timeframe.
The sales disparity between these two giants has grown to about one million devices, with Huawei selling 23.6 million smartwatches and fitness trackers, while Apple sold approximately 22.5 million units, including the latest Apple Watch Series 10.
Xiaomi is also capitalizing on the smartwatch boom in China, holding a market share of 14.7 percent, while Samsung follows with an 8.3 percent share. The fifth position is claimed by BBK Electronics, which encompasses brands like Vivo, Oppo, and OnePlus.
Despite the successes in China, the overall global wearable market has contracted by more than one percent, indicating saturation in the U.S. market.
