Several initiatives exist to avoid wasting flowers at the end of their life. Journalist Valérie Heurtel presents some of them on the set of the 13 Hours newspaper, Thursday, December 2.

Great initiatives can give flowers a second life. “Some florists bring their unsold items to hospitals. Others will also bring flowers to cemeteries. Selling them at discounted prices is also a nice gesture because it allows those who have little means to offer flowers”, indicates the journalist Valérie Heurtel, present on the set of the 13 Hours newspaper, Thursday, December 2. “There is a platform exclusively dedicated to the flowers of the next day, myflowerlife. This bouquet which is worth around thirty euros, you will find it on this site for a little more than 7 euros”, she continues.

Regarding plants, in Lyon, a nurseryman acts as a lifesaver. “He goes to wholesalers, to individuals, he recovers everything that is unsaleable, (…) he pampers them, he resuscitates them and he resells them. He called his shop the ‘SPA of plants'”., add Valérie Heurtel. If you want to avoid waste on your scale, consider drying your flowers instead of throwing them away. “On the internet, you will find plenty of tutorials to learn. You have to know how to dry flowers well to make them last”, explains the journalist. Another possibility: to make herbal teas. “And above all, to avoid polluting transport, choose French flowers”, concludes Valerie Heurtel, which specifies that “80% of the flowers we buy come from Africa and South America”.
