Time to plan 3rd dose of COVID-19 vaccine, researcher thinks

Quebec must imitate British Columbia and launch the administration of a 3rd dose of vaccine against COVID-19 in the general population, believes André Veillette, researcher in immunology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montreal.

“We hoped that would get rid of the virus and put a complete end to the pandemic. We realize that this is not the case, but that vaccines are very effective in protecting against hospitalizations and deaths ”, relativized the expert at the microphone of Sophie Durocher, on QUB Radio Tuesday.

Mr. Veillette said the data confirms a decline in the protection offered by vaccines over time. A phenomenon that was very difficult to predict in the face of a new virus.

“We didn’t know that at first. We didn’t even know if it was going to work, ”he added.

One thing is certain, it is far too early to let our guard down. André Veillette, for his part, decided to wear N95 masks rather than procedural masks to limit the risks of contracting the virus.

“We now know that the N95s are of superior quality. This is unfortunately not something that we discuss a lot, but it is clear that scientifically, it has been demonstrated. They are available now, ”said the researcher.
