While Tim Burton will receive the 14th Prix Lumière, Friday, October 21 in Lyon, the Cinema and Miniature Museum echoes the abundant universe of the director of “Batman”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” or “Edward aux Mains silver”. Restored and preserved, 60 objects from his films have been presented to the public for years.

His limitless imagination is rewarded. Tim Burton will receive the Lumière 2022 Prize on Friday, October 21, a prestigious award from the Lumière Festival. Among his most famous works, Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Beettle Juice. In Lyon, the Cinema and Accessories Museum exhibits around sixty objects from this abundant universe.

Burton’s characters, whose style is recognizable among a thousand, are imaginary and extraordinary, often decked out in incredible costumes and accessories. These iconic pieces that testify to his very personal work are presented to the public. They are now part of popular culture.

Among these objects, the visitor can see the original gloves from the film up close. Edward Scissorhands. They’re made entirely of rubber and there are no real blades, so Johnny Depp won’t hurt himself while shooting. Valuable accessories for fans of the director. There is also the robot of Mars Attacks and all the aliens! Because at the start, the animations had to be done in stock motion, that is to say image by image, from hand to hand with these little puppets. In the end, everything was done in 3D. The centerpiece of the museum is above all the Catwoman mask worn by actress Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman The Challenge. This film symbolizes the touch of Tim Burton whether in the visuals, the music, the narration, the characters.

These parts and accessories are so numerous that they often end up in the trash after filming. Some are recovered as souvenirs by technicians on set, happy to find them exhibited in museums. Next to Batman’s famous Penguin, the famous sand snake of beetle juice gets a makeover. Designed in latex, a fragile material that disintegrates quickly, the terrifying creature was finally repaired within the Museum’s own workshop. A good brushstroke gives it a second life. Having it in your hands 35 years later, “it is magic”, confides Laurie Courbier, the exhibition manager. A magic that also works with all fans of Tim Burton.
