TikTok tests a rival application to Instagram in Canada

(Toronto) TikTok is testing an application that rivals Instagram in Canada.

The social media company says TikTok Notes is available this week for download and “limited testing” in Canada and Australia.

TikTok Notes allows users to share photos and text.

The company claims on the X network that the test is part of the first stages of the experimentation it is undertaking with images and text.

The app’s launch comes as concerns grow around TikTok, as Chinese law requires companies in the country to help its government with intelligence gathering. The group that owns TikTok, ByteDance, is based in Beijing.

The United States is set to ban TikTok unless ByteDance sells its stake in the company, while Canada is currently conducting a national security review of the company.

TikTok has long denied being used as a tool by the Chinese government. The company maintains that it has never shared user data with Chinese authorities and has promised that it would not do so if asked.
