Tiger Woods withdraws from the Hero World Challenge

(Nassau) Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Hero World Challenge, a tournament he is hosting, due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Woods shared the news Monday in a post on his Twitter account.

The Hero World Challenge, scheduled for this weekend, was to be the first in a series of tournaments in December where Woods was to be the main star.

Woods is also scheduled to take part in a made-for-TV tournament the following weekend, then at the PNC Championship with his 13-year-old son on Dec. 17-18.

Two of these events remain on its calendar. The foot injury came as a surprise and is a disappointing highlight for those who haven’t seen Woods in action since last July in St. Andrews, Scotland.

The Hero World Challenge is scheduled to air on the NBC network over the weekend.

On Dec. 10, Woods is set to team with Rory McIlroy in a 12-hole, made-for-TV tournament against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

Woods has only played in three tournaments this year because of a weakened right leg from an automobile accident in February 2021 in suburban Los Angeles. The accident caused such extensive damage to his bones that doctors considered amputating his leg.

He first competed in the Masters Tournament in April and took part in all four rounds on the Augusta National course, which is tough for someone with healthy legs.

In May, he crossed the threshold to qualify for the PGA Championship but withdrew after the third round. He also played at the British Open in St. Andrews in July, but couldn’t qualify for the final two rounds.
