The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has announced that it has launched an investigation into Ticketmaster Canada following a cybersecurity incident that affected the personal information of millions of people worldwide.
The agency said Wednesday it launched the investigation in response to a complaint and added that it would assess Ticketmaster’s compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the federal private-sector privacy law.
Ticketmaster, owned by US company Live Nation Entertainment, informed its customers in early July that “an unauthorized third party” had retrieved information from a cloud database.
The ticket seller said the data accessed could have included customer names, basic contact information and payment card information such as encrypted credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates.
Canada’s Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne said the investigation will help the agency understand why the cyber incident happened and what needs to be done to prevent something like it from happening again.
Mr. Dufresne noted that data breaches have been on the rise over the past decade and have increased both in scale and complexity.
