The consequences of the war in Ukraine weigh on the holidays. The price of kerosene is soaring, with repercussions on the price of plane tickets. Long-haul flights are the most impacted.

Plane tickets whose prices fly away. In Orly (Val-de-Marne), Saturday April 23, travelers do not hide their exasperation. In one year, the prices of flights departing from France to foreign countries have increased on average by 6.1%, +13.5% for flights to overseas territories. Contacted by France Télévisions, Air France justifies the increase in services by the rise in fuel prices: “The situation with Ukraine has led to a sharp increase in the price of oil and therefore of kerosene (…) it represents between 20 and 30% of our costs.”

There is another explanation, linked to the health crisis according to Xavier Tytelman, aeronautical consultant: “To survive, the airlines have had to borrow billions and billions of euros, except that this money they will have to start paying back, so logically they are also increasing their prices to be able to survive and repay their credit”. Another factor in the price increase: the obligation to use 1% of sustainable fuel which allows a reduction in CO2 emissions. This fuel is now four to eight times more expensive than conventional kerosene.
