Stars win 2-1 in Washington

Jake Oettinger made 45 saves and the Dallas Stars defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Thursday night.

Stars forward Jamie Benn tied the game in the third period and Colin Miller scored the game-winning goal just 90 seconds later.

The Texas formation signed a fourth victory in its last five games.

The Capitals saw their winning streak end at five and Alex Ovechkin went off target for the first time in five games.

Ovechkin, who set up Conor Sheary’s goal, remained at 800 career goals, one shy of second-most Gordie Howe.

Charlie Lindgren blocked 24 of 26 pucks and saw his own five-game winning streak come to an end.

Trevor Moore plays heroes in shootout for Kings vs. Bruins

Adrian Kempe scored twice in the third period to help the Kings erase a two-goal deficit, Trevor Moore scored in the seventh round of the shootout and the Los Angeles squad secured a 3-2 win over the Bruins of Boston, Thursday.

It was only the Bruins’ second home loss this season.

Pheonix Copley stopped 33 shots and five more in the shootout for the Kings, who had lost their last two meetings and 10 of their last 15 games.

Taylor Hall and Brad Marchand scored in the second period to give the Bruins the lead. Linus Ullmark made 28 saves for Boston.

Both teams scored on their first two attempts of the shootout before Boston missed the next five. The Kings missed four in a row before Moore’s shot beat Ullmark to the glove side.

Jimmy Vesey scores twice in Rangers win

Jimmy Vesey scored two goals, Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves and the New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on Thursday for their fifth straight win.

Vesey broke the tie with 4:27 left in the second period. He then added an empty net goal. It was his fifth success of the campaign.

Filip Chytil also hit the mark for Rangers as Vincent Trocheck had two assists.

The Maple Leafs lost in regulation for the first time since Nov. 11. They had posted a 12-0-3 record in their previous 15 games. The Maple Leafs also had one point in nine straight road games, seven of which were wins.

Michael Bunting scored Toronto’s lone goal. Matt Murray made 18 saves in the loss.

Shesterkin has improved to 5-0-1 in his last six starts and 15-4-4 overall this season. He fended off a shot from Mitch Marner in the third period, which led to the end of the 23-game streak with at least one point from the dynamic winger.

The Hurricanes defeat the Kraken

Pyotr Kochetkov continued his success as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Seattle Kraken 3-2 on Thursday night.

Kochetkov, who allowed his first goal in over 151 minutes, made 15 saves for a sixth win in his last seven games.

Andrei Svechnikov and Derek Stepan scored in the first period and Stefan Noesen took the first penalty shot of his career in the second period.

The Hurricanes have had at least one point in their last nine outings.

Ryan Donato and Daniel Sprong replied for the Kraken, who concluded their four-game road trip with a 1-3-0 record.

Philipp Grubauer stopped 36 pucks in the loss.

Donato beat Kochetkov in the second period, ending the Hurricanes goaltender’s streak of 151 minutes and 26 seconds. It was still the team record for a rookie goaltender.

Brayden Point extended their streak with one goal to five, Brian Elliott made 24 saves for his seventh straight win and the Tampa Bay Lightning edged the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Thursday.

Brandon Hagel scored twice for the Lightning, and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored. Nikita Kucherov had three assists for the second straight game.

The Lightning finished a six-game home streak with a 5-1 record.

Lightning captain Steve Stamkos saw his 14-game one-point streak come to an end. He holds the club record with an 18-game streak in 2009-10.

Daniil Tarasov stopped 25 shots in the loss. Kirill Marchenko flashed the red light for the Blue Jackets, who fell to 2-7-1 on the road.

Penguins win 4-2 over Panthers

Kristopher Letang scored in his third game since returning from a stroke as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Florida Panthers 4-2 on Thursday night.

Letang suffered a second lifetime stroke on Nov. 28 and returned to training 10 days later. He returned to action on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabers and found the back of the net shorthanded on Thursday.

Jake Guentzel threaded the needle twice as Evgeni Malkin added a power-play goal for the Penguins.

In his sixth straight start, Tristan Jarry stopped 32 shots for the Penguins, who posted a seventh consecutive victory.

The Penguins are 12-1-1 in their last 14 games while Jarry is 10-0-1 in his last 11 appearances.

Ryan Lomberg and Sam Reinhart lined up for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves.
