Capitals 3-1 loss in Detroit
Alexander Ovechkin tied Gordie Howe’s record for most goals scored with a single National Hockey League team, but the Washington Capitals suffered a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.
Ovechkin broke the 0-0 tie midway through the second period for his 786e career goal with the Capitals, the same total Howe scored in a Red Wings uniform.
Ovechkin’s goal was scored at the same end of the rink where the Red Wings legend’s former number 9 hangs. Howe played with Detroit from 1946 to 1971 and completed his NHL career with 801 goals, the all-time high when he retired after the 1979-80 season.
Wayne Gretzky eventually erased that record and ended his career with 894 goals.
Lucas Raymond tied the score for the Red Wings on a power play late in the second period.
That tie held until with 3:50 left in the third period when Andrew Copp beat Darcy Kuemper for his first goal in 10 games.
Dylan Larkin sealed the match with an empty net goal in the last minute of play.
Ville Husso blocked 33 pucks in net for the Red Wings. On the Capitals side, Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves.

Ottawa loses fourth consecutive game
Leading 5-1 midway through the third period, the Vegas Golden Knights held off a late Ottawa Senators push and prevailed 5-4 on Thursday.
Vegas got their sixth straight win, while the Senators lost for the fourth straight time.
Mark Stone, Reilly Smith, Zach Whitecloud, Chandler Stephenson and William Carrier had the goals for the Golden Knights, while Logan Thompson made 42 saves.
Whitecloud scored his first goal of the season for Vegas.
Carrier took advantage of a turnover from Alex DeBrincat, near Anton Forsberg, to make it 5-1 midway through the third period.
The Knights racked up a goal on the power play and another on the penalty kill.
Claude Giroux and Tim Stutzle provided braces in a losing cause.
Forsberg stopped 14 of 19 shots, then Cam Talbot saved 13 pucks.
The Senators will play again Saturday night at home against Philadelphia.
The Knights will then be the visitors at the Bell Centre.

Bruins deserve seventh straight win
Trent Frederic broke the tie at 6:04 in the third period and the Boston Bruins raced to their seventh straight win on Thursday, inflicting a 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers.
Jake DeBrusk increased the cushion, then Hampus Lindholm completed in an empty net.
David Pastrnak set the tone with an eighth goal, a season high for Boston.
Charlie Coyle also scored for the Bruins, whose record is 10-1-0.
Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall each had two goals.
Linus Ullmark made 18 saves; he flinched in front of Jimmy Vesey and Adam Fox.
The Rangers were looking for a fourth straight win.
The Bruins are yet to allow a shorthanded road goal in five games.
Their next game is Saturday night in Toronto.
