Erik Kallgren shines in Maple Leafs win

Rookie goaltender Erik Kallgren stopped 35 shots en route to a second straight win when the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Thursday.

Mitch Marner, Ilya Mikheyev and Ondrej Kase scored for the Maple Leafs (39-17-5), who were playing a final game without the services of currently suspended NHL leading scorer Auston Matthews.

Ethan Bear and Vincent Trocheck sounded the charge for the Hurricanes (41-14-5). Frederik Andersen made 18 saves.

Called up from the AHL last week after Maple Leafs starting goaltender Jack Campbell suffered a rib injury, Kallgren started his second straight game at the expense of Petr Mrazek. He shut out the Dallas Stars in a 4-0 victory on Tuesday.

Ilya Sorokin stopped 29 shots for the Islanders

Kyle Palmieri gave the New York Islanders the lead with less than three minutes left in regulation to save them with a 2-1 victory against their New York rivals, the Rangers, on Thursday.

Ilya Sorokin stopped 29 shots for the Islanders, who went 4-0-1 in their last five games. Anders Lee also hit the target for Barry Trotz’s troupe.

Chris Kreider scored his 40th goal of the season — his 21st on the power play — and Igor Shesterkin stopped 26 shots for the Rangers, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.

Alexis Lafrenière and Jacob Trouba were complicit in Kreider’s goal. This is a first career power play point for the Eustachois.

Nikolas Backstrom had two assists as the Capitals improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven games. Vitek Vanecek blocked 39 shots in the win.

Oliver Bjorkstrand and Patrik Laine hit the mark for the Blue Jackets, who scored twice in their own net and incidentally snapped a three-game winning streak.
