Brad Marchand powers Bruins offense

Playing his first game this season, Brad Marchand had two goals and an assist as the Boston Bruins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 on Thursday.

Recovered from hip surgery, Marchand scored twice on the power play.

Charlie Coyle, Craig Smith and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, who won their fourth straight game.

Jeremy Swayman blocked 28 shots, yielding only to Adam Erne.

Head coach Jim Montgomery had confirmed Marchand’s return to action following his team’s morning practice.

The Bruins’ leading scorer last season, Marchand underwent arthroscopic surgery in May to repair damaged cartilage in his hips. He was to be sidelined for six months.

But in Marchand’s mind, the goal has always been to get back to the game faster.

Montgomery said he planned to be cautious with Marchand, and that he would manage his number of minutes per game. He played 17:31 on Thursday.

For now, Marchand won’t play two games in as many nights, which means he won’t be in uniform Friday in Columbus.

Marchand had 32 goals and 48 assists last season. In the playoffs, he added four goals and seven assists, but the Bruins were eliminated in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes.
