Kent Johnson completes double in overtime for Blue Jackets
Kent Johnson completed a double at 3:26 in overtime on Thursday, allowing the Columbus Blue Jackets to win 6-5 over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Johnson scored his third goal of the season with a wrist shot.
Patrik Laine, Justin Danforth, Yegor Chinakhov and Johnny Gaudreau were the other scorers for the visitors.
Elvis Merzlikins blocked 43 shots for the Jackets. They had been beaten on their last four occasions in overtime.
William Nylander, Mitch Marner, Jake McCabe and Auston Matthews responded for the Leafs.
Ilya Samsonov made 29 saves for Toronto, whose record through seven games was 5-0-2.
The Maple Leafs will host the Penguins on Saturday night.
Wednesday evening, Pittsburgh had the last word 4-3 at the Bell Center, in a shootout.

Brink allows Flyers to win in shootout
Bobby Brink scored the winning goal in the third round of the shootout on Thursday as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 4-3.
Brink also scored in regular time.
Sean Couturier also scored in the shootout, before a success from TJ Oshie, of the Capitals.
The Flyers earned their fifth win in six games.
Owen Tippett and Joel Farabee signed their other goals in regular time.
Dylan Strome, Tom Wilson and Connor McMichael provided the Capitals’ response in regulation time.
In overtime, Charlie Lindgren, of the Capitals, made a good blocker stop at the expense of Cam Atkinson, on a breakaway.
Brink gave his team a 1-0 lead early in the second period.
The Flyers are 14-1-0 when scoring the first goal in a game.

Carolina Hurricanes victorious in Detroit
Jordan Staal broke the deadlock midway through the second period on Thursday, guiding the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Jack Drury also scored and Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 25 shots.
Carolina finished a six-game road trip with two straight wins, following four straight losses.
Michael Rasmussen scored a 100e point in the NHL by being the scorer for the Wings.
Ville Husso made 36 saves for the Red Wings, who have lost four of their last five games.
The club was playing without its two best centers Dylan Larkin and JT Compher, who were injured.
David Perron was serving the third game of a six-game suspension for a double check against Artem Zub of the Ottawa Senators.

A first win in five games for the Blues
Robert Thomas had two goals and an assist as the St. Louis Blues prevailed 4-2 against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.
Drew Bannister thus collected his first victory at the helm of an NHL team.
Bannister until recently led the Blues’ AHL affiliate in Springfield, before Craig Berube was fired on Tuesday.
Pavel Buchnevich and Brandon Saad also scored, while Justin Faulk had a hand in both of Thomas’ goals.
Jordan Binnington made 32 saves for the Blues, who ended a four-game losing streak.
Dominik Kubalik and Mathieu Joseph scored the opposing clan’s goals.
Joonas Korpisalo blocked 26 shots for Ottawa, which has just one victory in four games.
St. Louis got the first 11 shots of the game.
Each of the clubs is preparing to compete against the Stars.
The Senators will play in Dallas on Friday. The next day, the Texan team will visit the Blues.

A fourth defeat in a row for the Flames
Mats Zuccarello and Matt Boldy converted their shootout chances on Thursday, leading the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames.
Boldy and Marco Rossi found the back of the net in regular time for Minnesota.
The team has a 6-2-0 record with John Hynes at the helm, replacing Dean Evason.
Filip Gustavsson made 36 saves, beaten only by Yegor Sharangovich and Blake Coleman.
Dan Vladar stopped 30 shots for the Flames, who lost a fourth straight game.
The club is 1-5-1 in seven games.
Boldy has seven goals and nine points since Hynes’ arrival.
Sharangovich has five goals in four games.
Rossi is at 10 nets; among rookies, he is only ahead of Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks in this regard.
The Wild will host the Vancouver Canuck on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday night, the Flames will host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
