Devils win 4-3 over Senators

Dougie Hamilton scored at 4:27 in overtime and the New Jersey Devils won their eighth straight game on Thursday, beating the Ottawa Senators 4-3.

He ended debate seven seconds after a penalty was awarded to Thomas Chabot of the Senators.

Nico Hischier won a faceoff. The disc went to Jack Hughes who passed to Hamilton, whose one-timer was the winner.

Hischier hit the post in the first minute of extra time.

Hischier, Miles Wood and Tomas Tatar were the other scorers for the winners.

Hughes had two assists.

Shane Pinto scored twice for the Senators, who lost for the seventh straight time.

The other net was the Travis Hamonic affair.

The Devils’ Vitek Vanecek made 17 saves before giving way to Akira Schmid midway through the third period, with the score 3-3.

Schmid stopped seven shots, including two spectacular saves in 32 seconds in overtime-both times against Brady Tkachuk, during a penalty to John Marino of the Devils.

The Devils’ next game is Saturday night at home against the Arizona Coyotes.

Anton Forsberg made 36 saves in a losing cause.

Tatar gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 4:44 in the first period when his shot deflected off Parker Kelly of the Senators.

Tatar has seven points in its last six games.

Pinto leveled midway through the first twenty. Jake Sanderson was patient before handing off to Claude Giroux, who spotted Pinto at the left mouth.

Hamonic scored with a slap shot before Hischier fought back late in the first period, following a long pass from Marino.

Early in the second period, the forecheck and persistence of Michael McLeod and Nathan Bastien led to the net for Wood, his sixth of the campaign.

Pinto, however, created a 3-3 deadlock early in the third period, following a pass from Drake Batherson.

Hurricanes beat Oilers 7-2

Andrei Svechnikov scored a hat trick in the Hurricanes victory.

Andrei Svechnikov recorded a hat trick as the Carolina Hurricanes crushed the Edmonton Oilers 7-2 on Thursday night.

It was Svechnikov’s second hat trick this season and his first was also scored against the Oilers.

Brent Burns, Jordan Staal, Jordan Martinook and Jesper Fast also scored for the Hurricanes, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Teuvo Teravainen and Martin Necas both finished the game with two assists for the North Carolina squad.

In his first game of the season, Pyotr Kochetkov signed the victory after saving 20 pucks.

Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist as Zach Hyman added a goal for the Oilers, who lost for the fourth time in their last five outings.

Jack Campbell stopped 25 shots in the loss.

Rangers correct Red Wings 8-2

Adam Fox had a goal and two assists for the Rangers, which snapped a three-game losing streak. They lost in overtime to the Red Wings on Sunday.

Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist to bring his streak to seven games with at least one point, which is a career high.

Barclay Goodrow, Julien Gauthier, Libor Hajek and Jimmy Vesey also scored for Rangers, who scored six unanswered goals in the third period.

Igor Shesterkin made 18 saves, leaving his team to set a season high in goals scored.

Joseph Veleno and Lucas Raymond replied for the Red Wings as Ville Husso stopped 25 shots. In his NHL debut, Jonatan Berggren had one assist.

Blue Jackets deserve first win in six games

Boone Jenner scored twice as the Blue Jackets posted their first win in six games on Thursday, losing the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2.

Johnny Gaudreau had one goal and two assists.

Zach Werenski and Nick Blankenburg also scored for the Blue Jackets, who hadn’t won since Oct. 23.

Joonas Korpisalo made 32 saves, being beaten by Ivan Provorov and Tony DeAngelo.

Carter Hart blocked 24 shots.

Columbus led 3-0 after Jenner’s first goal of the game, in the first minute of the second period.

Jenner completed the scoring in an empty net, getting her fourth goal of the season.

The Flyers will host the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.

Golden Knights edge Sabers 7-4

Jack Eichel was traded to the Golden Knights just over a year ago and was playing a second game against the team for which he once served as captain.

Jack Eichel enjoyed his return to Buffalo and the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Sabers 7-4 on Thursday night.

Booed every time he touched the puck and cheered on his two failed breakaway attempts, Eichel had two goals and an assist.

Eichel, who was traded to the Golden Knights just over a year ago, was playing a second game against the team for which he once served as captain.

The Golden Knights have signed a ninth straight victory, just one shy of their team record set in April 2021. They have the best record in the NHL (13-2-0).

Chandler Stephenson had a goal and three assists, Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and two assists while Paul Cotter had a goal and an assist. Phil Kessel also moved the ropes for the Nevada troupe.

Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots for a sixth straight win. He tied the longest streak for a goaltender this season, which was set by Vitek Vanecek of the New Jersey Devils.

Tage Thompson threaded the needle twice as Casey Mittelstadt and Rasmus Asplund added a goal apiece for the Sabres.

Eric Comrie blocked 29 pucks for the Buffalo team, which suffered a fourth straight loss.

Bruins win 3-1 over Flames

Charlie McAvoy scored the game-winning goal in his first game of the season as the Boston Bruins defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Thursday night.

McAvoy’s goal came on the power play with 1:33 remaining in the second period.

McAvoy, the Bruins’ top defenseman, was expected to miss six months of action after undergoing shoulder surgery in June. The 24-year-old had 10 goals and 56 points in 78 games last season.

Connor Clifton and David Pastrnak, in an empty net, also shone the red light for the Bruins, who went undefeated in eight home games this season.

Linus Ullmark made 31 saves for Boston, which sits atop the Eastern Conference with a 12-2-0 record.

Noah Hanifin scored the only goal for the Flames, who suffered a seventh straight loss. Dan Vladar blocked 24 shots.

A third straight win for the Arizona Coyotes

Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves as the Arizona Coyotes defeated the New York Islanders 2-0 on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Czech picked up his first shutout this season, a second of his career.

Travis Boyd and Jack McBain scored in the third period for the Coyotes, who won their third straight game.

Ilya Sorokin blocked 26 shots. The Islanders were looking for a third straight win.

Three minutes after Boyd’s goal, Matt Martin came close to leveling the score but his shot hit the post from a difficult angle.

The Blues end an eight-game losing streak

Calle Rosen had a goal and an assist as the St. Louis Blues got back to winning ways by defeating the San Jose Sharks 5-3 on Thursday night.

Rosen’s first goal of the season broke a 3-3 tie midway through the third period. Noel Acciari closed the books in an empty net.

Torey Krug, Jordan Kyrou and Brandon Saad also scored for the Blues, which snapped an eight-game losing streak, the longest in team history.

Jordan Binnington made 27 saves for the St. Louis squad, which won for the first time since Oct. 22.

The Blues have won their last six meetings against the Sharks and they have had at least one point in their last eight meetings.

Timo Meier, Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture found the back of the net for the Sharks, who suffered a fifth straight loss. Kaapo Kahkonen blocked 28 pucks.

Avalanche beat Predators 5-3

Logan O’Connor and Mikko Rantanen both scored twice to help the Colorado Avalanche win 5-3 over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night.

O’Connor scored twice within 85 seconds of the Avalanche’s four-goal push in the second period.

The Avalanche took advantage of this meeting to honor the memory of their longtime analyst Peter McNab, who died earlier this week at the age of 70. The team presented a video paying tribute to him.

Evan Rodrigues also moved the ropes as Nathan MacKinnon assisted on two Avalanche goals.

Alexandar Georgiev finished the game with 32 saves and collected his seventh victory in nine decisions this season (7-1-1).

Eeli Tolvanen, Ryan Johansen and Roman Josi hit the mark for the Predators, who suffered a second straight loss.

Kevin Lankinen stopped 30 pitches in a losing cause.
