Three whales were discovered stranded on three different beaches in Corsica on Saturday May 18, France Bleu RCFM learned from consistent sources.

The three whales ran aground in the communes of Aleria, Serra di Fiumorbu and Ghisonaccia, three communes in Haute-Corse, this Saturday morning. These are three Cuvier’s beaked whales, a species known to swim very deeply and to be generally discreet and rarely observed. The whale stranded in Ghisonaccia measured six meters and weighed 1.8 tonnes.

The three discoveries required the intervention of the emergency services and the aquatic intervention group of the department’s firefighters. All three animals were found alive, but only one of them survived and was returned to the water.

The carcasses of the two other cetaceans were towed using a crane provided by a construction company, before being placed in waterproof bins, Francis Giudici, the mayor of Ghisonaccia, told France Bleu RCFM.
