19/20 takes stock of the information from the last 24 hours in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukraine and Russia experience their 642nd day of war, Tuesday November 28. Buildings in ruins, Sergei Lavrov’s trip and Chechen fighters… Here is what we should remember from this day.
Image of the day: ruined buildings near Donetsk
In the heart of the city‘Avdiivka (Ukraine), buildings located not far from the front line are in ruins. Journalists from Agence France Presse were able to note that around 1,300 people still live in the city, compared to 30,000 inhabitants before the war. In this area, Russia advanced its positions during the fall, but the city remains under Ukrainian control.
Quote of the day: “We are not hiding,” assures Lavrov
“If we are approached, we do not run away and we do not hide”, said Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia. He spoke of his trip to Macedonia, scheduled for Wednesday November 29, to participate in an international meeting. Macedonia is a member of NATO and, as such, its airspace is in principle closed to Russian planes. The American Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, is also due to participate in this international OSCE meeting.
Today’s figure: 3,000 Chechen fighters
According to Ramzan Kadyrov, 3,000 Chechen fighters are ready to fight in Ukraine. Since the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the president of Chechnya has been one of Vladimir Putin’s most loyal supporters. In May 2023, he claimed that he had 7,000 soldiers present on the front in Ukraine.
