A particularly harsh video will be shown at the National Assembly on Tuesday, November 14 afternoon for the 120 deputies of the France-Israel friendship group. This 47-minute video, entitled “Bearing Witness to the October 7 massacre”, shows very distressing images of the Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7. Where do these images come from, who edited them and who has been able to see them until now? Franceinfo answers three questions about this video.

Who filmed these images?

The images shown in the video come from different sources. Most were filmed by Hamas fighters, with cellphones or cameras that were seized when those fighters were captured or killed. Other images were shot by the victims themselves or by rescuers who intervened after the attacks. Finally, some images come from video surveillance cameras. You can see the different locations of the October 7, 2023 attacks, including kibbutzim and the site of the Tribe of Nova festival.

Who edited this video?

It was the spokesperson for the Israeli army who produced a 47-minute montage from around a hundred hours of videos. The IDF indicates that, out of respect for the victims, it did not add to this documentary video images it intercepted of torture, particularly of children, or rape. A message specifies at the end of the video that it shows 138 victims, or approximately 10% of all victims recorded for that day of October 7.

Who has seen this video so far?

The Israeli government has decided not to organize a screening for the public due to the distressing nature of these images. A first screening was organized by the IDF on October 23, 2023 for 200 journalists accredited in Israel, then on October 1er November in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. The video was also shown to journalists in Israeli embassies in several countries, including the United States, Germany, France, Belgium and Chile. Israeli-American actress Gal Gadot and director Israeli Guy Nattiv also organized a screening at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles on November 8 for professionals from the Hollywood film industry. The Jewish State wishes to organize screenings of this documentary video in around thirty countries around the world. Before each screening, mobile phones must be left outside the room and participants must agree in writing not to make any recordings.
