“Among the five people who were wanted, we have currently located two people in the rubble and their extraction is in progress. There are still three people missing.”, says captain Stéphane Nepper of the Pompiers du Var, Tuesday, December 7 on franceinfo, after the collapse of a building in Sanary-sur-Mer on the night of Monday to Tuesday, at 3:50 am.
The firefighter claims that “of the two people located, one is conscious and the other is unconscious”. He specifies that “the neighboring buildings have been evacuated”, even if they stayed “stable” according to him.
The collapse was caused by an explosion, the causes of which are still unknown. But the trail of the gas leak is being investigated, because “the emergency services arrived on site detected a strong smell of gas”, according to the prefecture of Var.
The three-storey building is located rue Jean Jaurès, on the port of Sanary-sur-Mer, a town of about 15,000 inhabitants. Some 70 firefighters are mobilized for this operation and they will receive the reinforcement of teams specializing in rescue and clearance, including dog lovers. The prefecture has set up an operational center to coordinate operations.
“Colleagues on site questioned the neighborhood and estimated that five people could be under the rubble, but this is hypothetical. It is not known if these five people were really present when the building collapsed.”, for his part declared a police officer of the police station of Sanary-sur-Mer.
