Terrible murderous tragedy near Naples, Italy. Two young children, a brother and sister, were killed on Sunday, September 22, when a building collapsed in Saviano, in which they lived with their family, according to emergency services. “The firefighters found the father and a newborn baby alive, and unfortunately the lifeless bodies of the two other children.”the firefighters wrote on X. According to local media, the girl was 4 years old and her brother was 5 years old.
After several hours of searching, a third lifeless body, that of a woman, was discovered under the rubble. It has not yet been identified, Luca Cari, a spokesman for the fire brigade, told RaiNews 24. Some local media outlets believe that this body could be that of the grandmother of the children killed in the collapse, who lived on the second floor of the building. The father and baby, who were pulled from the rubble, were taken to hospital, the father in serious condition. The mother is still missing.
More than 60 civil protection volunteers are taking part in the rescue operations, according to the Campania region. “We managed to intervene quickly, because an army patrol that was passing nearby at that time saw smoke and approached. Rescue operations began immediately,” explained Colonel Paolo Leoncini, whose words were reported by Corriere della Sera.
A picture posted by firefighters appears to show blown-out walls on the second floor of the building and a large hole in the ceiling on the first floor. The collapse may have been caused by a gas explosion, according to media reports.
