They are suspected of having attempted to prepare a terrorist attack for Islamist motives. In Germany, three minors were arrested and placed in pre-trial detention during the Easter weekend, German justice announced on Friday April 12.
The arrest warrants concern two teenage girls aged 15 and 16, and a 15-year-old boy from North Rhine-Westphalia. They are suspected of having “planned an Islamist-motivated terrorist attack and admitted being ready to commit it”, according to a press release from the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office (Germany). The prosecution did not give additional details about what they were planning, “due to the age of the suspects and the ongoing investigation.”
A danger that remains “acute” in Germany
German authorities have been on guard regarding the Islamist threat, particularly since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. In an interview at the end of March with the German daily South German Zeitungthe Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, stressed that “the danger emanating from Islamist terrorism remained acute” in Germany. The authorities are all the more on alert as Germany prepares to host the Euro football tournament, from June 14 to July 14.
According to Nancy Faeser, “Currently, the biggest Islamist threat in Germany comes from the Islamic State – Khorasan Province” (EIK)”. In recent months in Germany, two raids have targeted suspected members of this branch, before they took action.
