Three men were arrested in the Paris region. They allegedly defrauded the Post Office by making it appear that packages were lost.
Thousands of packages pass through the Post Office every day. Scammers have developed a sleight of hand, using mail scanners stolen from the company. The stratagem was well rehearsed. On the e-commerce site, a customer orders a product. The package is delivered to him by post, and the customer, in collusion with the crook, assures that the item does not suit him, he must then return it with a barcode. This is where the scammer steps in, scanning it to declare it lost. The customer is then reimbursed for the product and pays part of the amount to the scammer.
More than 400 packages diverted
The Post Office, which discovered the deception, filed a complaint. As for the police investigation, it is progressing quickly. The arrested men are suspected of having diverted more than 400 packages. Several discussion threads on encrypted messaging services are at the heart of the investigations. The three suspects will be tried in May for organized gang fraud.
