The day after the first mountain stage between Venosa and Lago Laceno, won by the French Aurélien Paret-Painter (AG2R Citroën), in front of the new pink jersey Andreas Leknessund (DSM), the Giro 2023 continues in the transalpine plains. With 171 kilometers, three climbs and 2,400 meters of elevation gain, the fifth stage between Atripalda and Salerno will set off in the mountains on Tuesday May 9, before finishing on a straight flat line.

The first difficulty of the day will appear in the first minutes of the race with the Passo Serra (3.9 kilometers at 7.4%), first rib of third category. Runners will then climb gradually up to Guardia Lombardi at kilometer 71 (8.4 km at 3%), before tackling the second third category climb, that of Oliveto Citra (2.6 km at 8%), at about sixty kilometers of arrival. The course will eventually level out after Battipaglia, most likely calling for a sprint finish, unless a solo breakaway has bent the race uphill.
