Canada won two gold medals and a silver in judo on day six of the Commonwealth Games.
Shady ElNahas first defeated fellow Ontarian Kyle Reyes in the 100kg final to claim the division gold, relegating Reyes to second place on the podium. ElNahas had narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Laval resident Marc Deschênes then won gold in the over 100 kg category.
Canada added another gold medal to its haul when British Columbian Nick Bennett won the Para-swimming 200m freestyle.
ElNahas’ victory came 24 hours after his brother Mohab won bronze, also in judo. As there were two Canadians in the final, the head coach of the Canadian delegation was not in the corner of the two judokas for this ultimate duel. Shady called on his older brother for advice.
ElNahas now aspires to become world champion in Uzbekistan in October.
