Three foreign tourists found dead in Greece in one week

The toll is growing. The body of a 55-year-old American tourist was discovered in Greece on the island of Corfu on Sunday June 16. His body was discovered at sea near the port of Mathraki, and must be transferred to Corfu hospital for an autopsy, local media reported.

This is the third foreign tourist found dead in a week in the country, according to Greek media. The dark series began with British TV star doctor Michael Mosley, found dead on June 9 on the Greek island of Symi in the Aegean Sea. Then the body of a 74-year-old Dutch tourist was discovered on the island of Samos on Saturday, lying in a ravine a few hundred meters from where he was last seen last Sunday, trying to walk with difficulty.

Searches are still underway to find three other missing foreign tourists. Among them, two French women aged 73 and 64, missing since Friday June 14 in Sikinos, a small Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea. Another tourist goes missing on the island of Amorgos.

Most of these tourists had undertaken hikes under the blazing sun, while the heatwave was raging in Greece. According to meteorologists, Greece experienced the earliest heat wave (with temperatures above 38 degrees) lasting at least three days on record, which has already led to the partial closure of the Acropolis from Athens.
