Three European countries, Spain, Ireland and Norway, announced on Wednesday May 22 their decision to recognize the existence of a Palestinian state. This decision angered the Israeli government.

It was Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, who led the way. “To achieve this two-state solution, both parties must sit down to negotiate on an equal footing, with the same legitimacy. This is why we will recognize the State of Palestine”, did he declare. Last fall, the socialist leader announced to recognize a Palestinian state. Having been on the move for months, he has joined other European countries: Norway and Ireland.

The announcement by these three countries was immediately castigated by Israel. “The intention of several European countries to recognize a Palestinian state is a reward for terrorism”, estimated Benjamin Netanyahu. In the process, Israel recalled its ambassadors in Ireland and Norway. The recognition of the Palestinian state by other states establishes bilateral relations between them such as the opening of a consulate or an embassy.
