three departments request “states general” on the management of the Landes de Gascogne forest

How not to relive fires as devastating as those which affected the Gironde in mid-July? The presidents departments of Gironde, Landes and Lot-et-Garonne have requested the organization of“states general of the Landes de Gascogne massif”in a letter addressed to the prefect of Gironde Thursday, July 28.

Jean-Luc Gleyze, Xavier Fortinon and Sophie Borderie, three elected socialists, believe that we must draw from the two disasters which destroyed nearly 21,000 hectares “a feedback that is beneficial so that in the future, while climate change is at work, we are no longer confronted with fires of such magnitude”.

In their letter to the prefect Fabienne Buccio, they plead for a work which would associate, this autumn, the State, the three departments, the departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS), the region, representatives of foresters, the Defense of forests against fires, the Regional Center for Forest Property and the Regional Natural Park Landes de Gascogne, as well as scientists and academics.

“We will have to talk about the relationship between urbanism and forest, organization of space, services to the massif, its accessibility, replanting and forest maintenance, vulnerability to other risks such as storms”they say.

Thursday, Sophie Borderie, president of Lot-et-Garonne and Sdis 47, and the mayor of Agen (Lot-et-Garonne) Jean Dionis proposed that the city host “an advanced system of civil security air resources”. A proposal already pushed by Jean-Luc Gleyze at the start of the fires, believing that the Landes forest should “to be equipped with aerial means of combat” against fires. Today, all water bomber planes are stationed in Nîmes (Gard).
