Heavy rains continue in Australia. The authorities asked, Friday, October 14, several thousand Australians to evacuate their homes in the south-east of the country to escape the floods which threaten the localities of three different states.

Rapidly rising waters submerged Maribyrnong, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. The government of this state, the most affected and the second most populous in Australia, is preparing to reopen a quarantine center for Covid-19 to shelter people whose homes were uninhabitable.

Northern Tasmania, an island state located in the south of the country, was also preparing for major flooding on Friday. Evacuation orders were issued and heavy rain forced the closure of some 120 roads.

In New South Wales, the country’s most populous state, an evacuation center was set up after heavy rain Thursday evening in Forbes, an inland town about five hours from road east of Sydney.

Australia is on the frontline of the consequences of climate change, with floods, bushfires, cyclones and droughts becoming more frequent and intense as the planet warms.
