This week, the migratory monitoring mission installed for 3 months on the cliffs of Leucate counted in a single day the passage of more than a thousand white storks which come to breed in Europe at the end of winter. An ideal spot to follow the passage of these great migrants and the opportunity for us to discover a world: that of the 300 species of birds that live here or cross our department each year, listen!
It is the president of the Ornithological Group of Roussillon, Yves Aleman who serves as our guide. Ever since he “met” a European bee-eater when he was a teenager, he has fallen in love with the birds. This passion has never left him and the Pyrénées-Orientales are a great playground. He recognizes their song, he spends hours observing them, sometimes counting them or protecting them because the threat of climate change weighs on them. .
From the nightingale to the great tit, from the oriole to the winter wren, from storks to common cranes, we follow our ornithologist in this fascinating discovery, listen up!
We also stop on the cliffs of Leucate. It is here that Gabriel Caucal settled with Med Migration to observe for three months the passage of migrants in a dream setting, against a backdrop of Canigou, the Mediterranean and Corbières. From morning to evening, he scientifically counts the birds and it was he who last Wednesday was able to observe this exceptional flight of storks, listen!
Among our guests, a bird singer capable of reproducing nearly 300 songs from the nightingale to the seagull, but also Enzo, 10 years old, elected to the municipal council of children in Sorède and who explains to us why the children of the village decided to install nesting boxes for chickadees and bats.
Because all these birds live with the threat of climate change. Some species are disappearing and it is also the mission of the Ornithological Group of Roussillon to protect them. But we can all do something to help them, especially during the nesting period, listen.
For all bird lovers, a nature festival will also take place soon on May 7 and 8 in Alenya. And in the meantime, do not hesitate to contact the Groupe Ornithologique du Roussillon if you find an injured bird or one that has fallen from the nest or if you want to help them identify the birds of the POs.
